A Walk to Remember

'When Enoch was sixty-five, he fathered Methuselah. Enoch walked with God for three hundred years after Methuselah was born and had many other sons and daughters. Enoch and God walked together as intimate friends; then God took him to himself, and he was seen no more. The life span of Enoch was three hundred and sixty-five years.' - Genesis 5:21-23
Three verses, one man, and a lot to unpack.
We don’t know a ton about Enoch. There is a book called the “Book of Enoch” that didn’t pass the mustard in making it into the canon of Scripture and for good reason. Many things in that book aren’t congruent with Scripture and, like many other ancient writings, seem to be false and not authored by the claimed author.
Two other places in Scripture specifically speak about Enoch…
'By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. ' - Hebrews 11:5
'Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” ' - Jude 1:14-15
That’s it, and yet this guy was one of only two people in Scripture who did not experience death. The other was Elijah. Why? I don’t totally know, but Scripture obviously says some pretty cool things about him.
“Enoch and God walked together as intimate friends,” and “he was commended as one who pleased God.”
Enoch was a friend of God to the extent that God wanted Enoch to be with Him forever. I love the phrase that Enoch walked with God for 300 years after Methuselah was born. People lived much longer back then, hence the phrase “older than Methuselah!”
But it was the long obedience in the same direction that has caught my eye, and I believe caught God’s attention.
My favorite quote of all time is:
“A long obedience in the same direction.” - Eugene Peterson
Maybe the greatest evidences of our faith is being consistent and obedient in one direction.
We don't know much about Enoch; but, then again, that is kind of the point. We don’t, but God did.
I believe God wants that with me and with you. His invitation is open. The question is: will we take Him up on it?
